Since the appropriateness of a study, as well as its ability to be \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eaccepted as scientific research, depend very much on the correct choice of the \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eapplied research method(s), the decision process for the latter constitutes a \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ecrucial phase of the overall research operation. \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eAs many researchers encounter ambiguities when it comes to selecting the \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003esuitable research technique, this paper provides a critical reflection on several \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003earguments for and against the employment of in-depth interviews, one of the \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003emost common tools used in qualitative research. \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe aim of this paper is, therefore, to consider the strengths and weaknesses of \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ein-depth interviews from various angles, in order to advance the perspicuity of \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ethe question in which situations it is apt to use interviews as a research tool and \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ewhen to better search for alternative methods. \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eTo arrive at this objective, four main issues have been explored through a \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ereview of already existing literature. First, the merits of individual in-depth \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003einterviews are examined. Then the paper addresses the question of what \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003epossible drawbacks one may come across when selecting in-depth interviewing \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eas a research method. Furthermore, a short comment on the application of indepth \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003einterviews in qualitative tourism research is given. Finally, in the \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003econclusions\/recommendations section it is explained for which types of \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003einvestigations the in-depth interview is the appropriate research technique. \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eAs indicated above, the main focus of this paper is not on providing a guide for \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ethe general set-up and implication process of an in-depth interview.
