As Anne K. Mellor pointed out, Romanticism as a literary\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003emovement was constructed and defined by a masculine discourse and\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eideology, a ¿masculine Romanticism¿. This masculine Romanticism is the\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003etraditional understanding of the literary movement ¿ based on the\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ewritings and thoughts of the five canonical writers Wordsworth,\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eColeridge, Byron, Shelley, and Keats. Mellor suggests that ¿feminine\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eRomanticism¿ occurs to recover the erased and neglected voices of women\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ewriters within this movement. To understand these differences of\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003emasculine and feminine Romanticism, one has to realize that both terms\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eserve as an ideological gender construction, not in terms of the author¿s\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003esex. To analyse female romantic literature also means to consider the\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003edivision of ¿private¿ and ¿public¿ sphere occuring in the eighteenth\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ecentury, a phenomenon that should be discussed in the following\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003echapter.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThis paper aims to show how women writers could made a career in the\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003emale-dominated time of Romanticism. In order to show the problems they\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eexperienced within a patriarchal society, I will explore the subordination\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eof women by a construction of femininity which did not grant them the\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003estatus of rational thinking subjects. For this purpose I have chosen the\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eexample of Mary Wollstonecraft, the revolutionary founder of feminism.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eWollstonecraft was not only a writer herself, but she was also the wife of\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ethe well-known political philosopher, William Godwin, and she gave birth\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eto Mary Godwin Shelley, the famous author of Frankenstein.
