Excerpt: Robert Arnauld d'Andilly (28 May, Paris - 27 September 1674, abbaye de Port-Royal-des-Champs) was a French conseiller d'État, specialising in financial questions, in the court of Marie de' Medici. By the elegance of his language, he was among the major poets, writers and translators of 17th century French classicism. A fervent Catholic, he played an important role in the history of Jansenism and was one of the Solitaires of Port-Royal-des-Champs. He was also renowned for his part in the development of the pruning of fruit trees, to which he was devoted. La mère Angélique Arnauld. Ricci started learning theology and law in a Roman Jesuits' school. He entered the religious order in 1571, and in 1577 he filed an application to be a member of a missionary expedition to India. His journey began in March 1578 from Lisbon, Portugal. He arrived in Goa, a Portuguese Colony, in September 1578, and four years later he was dispatched to China.
