Spurred on by\nthe modernizing impulses of the Second Vatican Council\nin the early 1960s, and in search for an appropriate architectural\nlanguage that showed that the Catholic Church\nwas still relevant to the modern world, this was the period\nwhen the church married the atheist architect, and bore a\nchild of pure form. Among these structures, some exude a\njoyful antagonism, while others emanate a cold minimalism.\nBoldly designed, outrageous and provocative for their\ntime, the aesthetic of this period still ignites great debate\nbetween modernists and traditionalists.\n\n \n \u003cbr\u003e\n Half a century on, this study traces how their materials and\nideals have matured and patinated.
