Initially, the research in library science in India remaining a sporadic activity for about two decades reached its threshold point in 1977 to touch the ¿water divide¿ mark by 1990. The 1990s recorded a rapid growth in both the number of doctoral degree awarded and geographical spread of universities\/ institutes running doctoral degree programmes in the country. Panjab University has covered diverse sub-fields and emerging themes more than the national level.
