A key\u003c\/p\u003e\n                                \n                \u003cp\u003epart of understanding the trajectories in both Argentina and Brazil has been the\u003c\/p\u003e\n                                \n                \u003cp\u003erole played by international institutions, especially the IMF and WTO, and also,\u003c\/p\u003e\n                                \n                \u003cp\u003ethe ever-growing hegemony of transnational corporations in the global economy\u003c\/p\u003e\n                                \n                \u003cp\u003eand as a result, significantly limiting the possibilities of genuine development for\u003c\/p\u003e\n                                \n                \u003cp\u003elocal populations.\u003c\/p\u003e\n                                \n                \u003cp\u003e \u003c\/p\u003e\n                                Two major issues which extend beyond Latin America are: the expansion of\n                \n                \u003cp\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n                                \n                \u003cp\u003egenetically modified crops and agrotoxics and the concern for global food security\u003c\/p\u003e\n                                \n                \u003cp\u003eand sovereignty; second, how reprimarization, associated with mining, cattle, soy\u003c\/p\u003e\n                                \n                \u003cp\u003eand petroleum, has been key in leading to the risk of desertification in the\u003c\/p\u003e\n                                \n                \u003cp\u003eArgentine pampas and also causing deforestation in the Amazon Rain forest,\u003c\/p\u003e\n                                \n                \u003cp\u003edescribed as the lungs of the planet, and thus has major implications for climate\u003c\/p\u003e\n                                \n                \u003cp\u003echange for the planet as a whole.\u003c\/p\u003e\n                                \n                \u003cp\u003e \u003c\/p\u003e\n                                \n                \u003cp\u003eIn addition, this book engages with a number of theoretical issues: development\u003c\/p\u003e\n                                \n                \u003cp\u003eand dependency in the periphery: neoliberal globalization, accumulation by\u003c\/p\u003e\n                                dispossession, ecological and environmental debates and the role of extractivism\n                \n                \u003cp\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n                                \n                \u003cp\u003eand rent.
