Recent years have \nseen significant advances in the application of sophisticated \nmathematical theories to the problems arising in image processing. \nBasic issues include image smoothing and denoising, image enhancement, \nmorphology, image compression, and segmentation (determining \nboundaries of objects-including problems of camera distortion and \npartial occlusion). Several mathematical approaches have emerged, \nincluding methods based on nonlinear partial differential equations, \nstochastic and statistical methods, and signal processing techniques, \nincluding wavelets and other transform theories. \nShape theory is of fundamental importance since it is the bottleneck \nbetween high and low level vision, and formed the bridge between the \ntwo workshops on vision. The recent geometric partial differential \nequation methods have been essential in throwing new light on this \nvery difficult problem area.
