Unfortunately, his \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003especial treatise on plants¿¿¿¿¿¿¿ ¿¿¿¿ ¿¿¿¿¿¿is lost; and although there \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eare many botanical passages scattered throughout his other writings \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e(which have been collected by Wimmer, Phytologiae Aristotelicae \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eFragmenta, 1836), yet none of them gives any indication of what his ideas \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eof classification may have been. An echo of them is perhaps to be found in \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ethe works of his favourite pupil, Theophrastus Eresius (b.c. 371-286), who \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eamong all his fellows was the most successful in pursuing the botanical \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003estudies that they had begun under the guidance of the master. \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eTheophrastus left behind him two important, though incomplete, treatises \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eon plants, the oldest that have survived: the more familiar Latin titles of \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ewhich are De Historia Plantarum and [De Causis Plantarum]. The latter is \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eessentially physiological, touching upon agriculture to a certain extent: the \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eformer is mainly morphological, structural, descriptive, and it is here that \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ethe first attempt at a classification of plants is to be found.
