How these processes are organised, experienced and interpreted is profoundly shaped by social norms and by cultural and religious aspirations. Using “childbearing” as an analytical category of comparison, Johannes Endler examines practices and interpretative horizons from the mid-nineteenth to the late twentieth century. At the heart of the study is the advice literature of alternative culture, which sets itself apart from prevailing social norms and links particular forms of childbearing to the hope for a “new world”.
