A pool of components and\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003esubassemblies, necessary for the assembly of a series of systems, is\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003echaracterized prior to the assembly and measurement results are stored in a\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003edatabase. Then, optimal component combinations are found during a modelbased\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eselection process.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe application of combinatorial assembly to optical systems requires a delicate\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003echoice of parameters for characterization, modules and tolerances before\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ecomponents are manufactured. Predicting the as-built performance of\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ecombinatorially assembled systems with high accuracy is therefore necessary\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eand a dedicated tolerance analysis concept based on Monte Carlo analyses is\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eproposed. The concept is universally applicable to problems that can be\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003emodelled with ray-tracing and is implemented using a combination of raytracing\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003esoftware, logic calculator and database. This makes it possible to\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eaccurately analyze the impact of tolerances, production volume and additional\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003euncertainties on the performance of combinatorially assembled optical systems.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eFor optimal compensation, tolerance distributions should match each other in a\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003especific way and it is illustrated that this can be difficult to realize for some lens\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003edesigns due to manufacturing limits. In order to reduce this restriction, design\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003estrategies increasing combinatorial compensation are derived. Adapting the\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eoptical design from the outset to suit combinatorial assembly can shift\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003etolerance sensitivities from one component to another. Compensation can be\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eenhanced and the influence of uncharacterized parameters reduced. In using\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ecombinatorial assembly in conjunction with desensitization, systems with higher\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003enominal performance yet reduced tolerance demands can be build.
