This announcement often leads to a financial\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003edisaster due to public disclosure of a data breach that negatively impacts a company¿s\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003emarket value, as well as customers¿ relationship with the company, and in a worst-case\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003escenario, it can threaten the company¿s very existence.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eCurrently, recommendations and standards to minimize these losses are lacking, but\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eaffected companies do not remain inactive and react ad hoc to the double-edged negative\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003econsequences by developing strategies, the so-called response strategy, to limit damage\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ethrough the public announcement of the data breach. However, it remains unclear\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ewhether and how these response strategies make an impact.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThis dissertation analyzes response strategies¿ effects via four studies and clarifies\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ewhether and how these strategies can impact negative consequences. The studies¿\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eresults indicate that response strategies always comprise a combination of several\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eresponse actions. An examination of real response strategies can be used to clarify which\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eresponse actions currently are practiced to follow up with a detailed analysis. This\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eanalysis indicated that the studied response actions justification, apology, and\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ecompensation affect market value and customer relationships. Using expectationconfirmation\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003etheory and signaling theory, these response actions¿ mechanism\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003esubsequently is uncovered and explained: The mechanism is two-dimensional, and the\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eresponse actions elicit direct and side effects.
