After leaving Belle Vue High School, he spent some time as a junior clerk in a wool office. He joined the army in 1914, and in 1919, on receiving an ox-officers¿ grant, went to Trinity Hall, Cambridge. In 1922, after refusing several academic posts, and having already published one book and contributed critical articles and essays to various reviews, he went to London. There he soon made a reputation as an essayist and critic. he began writing novels, and with his third and fourth novels, \u003ci\u003eThe Good Companions\u003c\/i\u003e and \u003ci\u003eAngel Pavement\u003c\/i\u003e, he scored a great success and established an international reputation. This was enlarged by the plays he wrote in the 1930s and 1940s, some of these, notably \u003ci\u003eDangerous Corner\u003c\/i\u003e, \u003ci\u003eTime and the Conways\u003c\/i\u003e and \u003ci\u003eAn Inspector Calls\u003c\/i\u003e, having been translated and produced all over the world. During the Second World War he was exceedingly popular as a broadcaster. Since the war his most important novels have been \u003ci\u003eBright Day\u003c\/i\u003e, \u003ci\u003eFestival at Farbridge\u003c\/i\u003e, \u003ci\u003eLost Empires\u003c\/i\u003e and \u003ci\u003eThe Image Men\u003c\/i\u003e, and his more ambitious literary and social criticism can be found in \u003ci\u003eLiterature and Western Man\u003c\/i\u003e, \u003ci\u003eMan and Time\u003c\/i\u003e and \u003ci\u003eJourney Down a Rainbow\u003c\/i\u003e, which he wrote with his wife, Jacquetta Hawkes, a distinguished archaeologist and a well-established writer herself. It was in this last book that Priestley coined the term ¿Admass¿, now in common use. Among his latest books are \u003ci\u003eVictoria¿s Heydey\u003c\/i\u003e (1972), \u003ci\u003eOver the Long High Wall\u003c\/i\u003e (1972), \u003ci\u003eThe English\u003c\/i\u003e (1973), \u003ci\u003eOutcries and Asides\u003c\/i\u003e, a collection of essays (1974), \u003ci\u003eA Visit to New Zealand\u003c\/i\u003e (1974), \u003ci\u003eThe Carfitt Crisis\u003c\/i\u003e (1975), \u003ci\u003eParticular Pleasures\u003c\/i\u003e (1975), \u003ci\u003eFound, Lost, Found, or the English Way of Life\u003c\/i\u003e (1976), \u003ci\u003eThe Happy Dream\u003c\/i\u003e (1976), \u003ci\u003eEnglish Humour\u003c\/i\u003e (1976) and an autobiography, \u003ci\u003eInstead of the Trees\u003c\/i\u003e (1977). In 1977 J. B. Priestley received the Order of merit.
