The \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eSkyhawk was intended to replace the \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003evenerable Skyraider as a carrier-based, \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eground attack aircraft, yet Heinemann's \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003edesign looked nothing like its predecessor.  \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eIts small, lightweight airframe was so \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ecompact that its wings did not even have to \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ebe folded for carrier stowage, and it \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003esurpassed the Navy's design specification \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003efor weight by nearly 100%.  No wonder the\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003enimble jet was dubbed \"Heinemann's Hot \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eRod\".  \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe A-4 entered service in 1956, and first \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003esaw combat during the early days of the \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eVietnam War where it flew as a light \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eattack aircraft.  Its service in S.E. Asia \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ewas prolific, as it flew literally thousands \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eof strike and escort missions and even \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003escored an air-to-air victory over a North\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eVietnamese MiG.  A Marine A-4 is believed \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eto be the last American aircraft to drop \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ebombs on Vietnam.  During the conflict 362 \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eSkyhawks were lost.  \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe Navy retired the Skyhawk in 1975, \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ealthough it continued flying as a trainer \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eand adversary aircraft as late as 2003.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eNearly 3,000 Skyhawks were built before \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eproduction ceased in 1979, including a two-\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eseat trainer model TA-4.
